Nearly everyone agrees that the best time to look for a job is when you are gainfully employed. It can be tricky, but here are a few hints. 

1) Don’t share with co-workers or others at work. 

Sharing the information that you might be looking at a job change will almost certainly start office gossip. This can create uncomfortable situations with co-workers as well as your boss. 

2) Keep your resume off job boards and refrain from mentioning your job search on social media. 

Even if your social media profiles are set to private, news has a way to traveling. Placing your resume on a job board means you’ll be getting calls and emails at work from recruiters and potential employers, which could send up red flags and tip off your coworkers and boss.

3) Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date.

LinkedIn is one way to easily present your credentials to the world (including other potential employers) that is not frowned upon. Take advantage of it. 

4) Never use practice equipment to search for positions.

This includes not only your computer at the office but also company-paid cell phones. If you have a company-owned laptop that you often use at home, you should avoid using it for your job search. 

5) If you have contact with a prospective employer, let them know your job search is confidential.

Most prospective employers understand the need to keep job searches quiet until you’re ready to make a move, so communicate this early on to avoid potential issues.

6) Do not list current co-workers or supervisors as references.

While it may be tempting to list co-workers or supervisors with whom you currently have a positive working relationship, doing so is a surefire way to cause a conflict of interest with your current employer.

7) Bank some PTO for potential interviews.

Be sure to set some time aside so you can travel to interviews without causing conflicts or issues with your current schedule.

 During your job search, do your best to stay focused on performing your job duties at a high level and treating your co-workers in ways that are consistent with your normal behaviors.
